My 9-Day Panchakarma Journey at Somatheeram: Treatments and Insights from an Ayurvedic Lifestyle Consultant

Updated: 24 hours ago

Embarking on a Panchakarma retreat is a profound step toward healing and balance. As an Ayurvedic lifestyle consultant with years of experience, I approached my 9-day Panchakarma treatment at Somatheeram Ayurveda Resort in Kerala with both professional curiosity and personal intention. Preparing for a week before the treatments, I aimed to deepen my understanding of Ayurveda through firsthand experience. This post shares the treatments I underwent, the insights I gained, and how this journey enriched my practice and well-being.

Preparing for Panchakarma

Before arriving at Somatheeram, I followed a preparatory regimen for seven days. This included a sattvic food and daily meditation. Preparing the body and mind helped me enter the detoxification process with clarity and receptiveness. Panchakarma is not just about the treatments but also about creating the right conditions for healing.

Overview of Treatments

My beautiful Therapists, Ashamarg and Vismaya.

Dashamoola Ksheeradhara: Pouring of medicated milk infused with ten roots on the forehead for deep relaxation.

During the nine days, I experienced a carefully curated sequence of therapies designed to cleanse, rejuvenate, and balance the doshas (Vata/Pitta). The treatments included:

  • Shirodhara is a classical Ayurvedic therapy in which warm medicated oil is poured in a slow, continuous, and rhythmic stream over the forehead, specifically over the area of the “third eye.” The steady flow of oil has a deeply calming effect on the nervous system, helping to soothe the mind and release tension.

  • Tailadhara: is a traditional Ayurvedic therapy in which a continuous, gentle stream of warm medicated oil is poured rhythmically over the body or a specific area. This deeply soothing treatment calms the nervous system, relieves stress and fatigue, and helps balance Vata dosha. It is especially beneficial for insomnia, anxiety, muscle stiffness, and disorders related to the nervous system, promoting deep relaxation and overall rejuvenation.

  • Dhanyamla Dhara: This is a specialized Ayurvedic therapy in which a continuous, rhythmic stream of warm, fermented herbal liquid—prepared from cereals, grains, and medicinal herbs—is poured over the body. The treatment helps reduce inflammation, stiffness, and pain, and is highly effective in managing rheumatoid arthritis, Vata–Kapha imbalances, and obesity. It supports detoxification while enhancing circulation and overall vitality.

Chakravasti: This is an Ayurvedic treatment in which warm, medicated oil is retained within a ring of herbal paste placed over the navel area (nabhi/solar plexus). It is used to strengthen digestion, relieve abdominal discomfort, and balance the body’s energy. The treatment helps release deep-seated tension and harmonizes the digestive fire (agni)

  • Reflexology: Targeted foot massage to stimulate energy points and improve organ function.

  • Dashamoola Ksheeradhara: Warm medicated milk is gently poured over the body and head from a specific height using a special vessel, in a steady, rhythmic flow. This deeply calming treatment is especially beneficial for insomnia, mental stress, headaches caused by pitta imbalance, and menopausal symptoms.

  • Marma Massage: Gentle manipulation of vital energy points to release blockages and enhance vitality.

  • Ksheeradhara: Warm medicated milk poured on the forehead to soothe the mind and nervous system.

  • Podikizhy: A therapeutic herbal powder massage that stimulates circulation and detoxifies the skin.

Each treatment had a unique purpose and effect, contributing to a holistic cleansing

and revitalization.

In addition to these therapies, I was prescribed Ayurvedic medicines including Ashwagandha and Dadimashtak Churna to support immunity, digestion, and overall

well-being throughout the treatment.

Daily Routine and Experience

My days began with meditation as part of my usual morning routine, followed by an early treatment that started at 7:30 a.m. After the treatment, I had breakfast and took time to rest, often enjoying herbal teas. Later, I relaxed with a refreshing swim in the pool. In the afternoon, I attended a yoga session. The tranquil setting of Somatheeram, surrounded by coconut groves and the Arabian Sea, provided the perfect environment for healing and renewal.

Podikizhy was invigorating, leaving my skin refreshed and energized. Tailadhara and Dashamoola Ksheeradhara sessions were deeply calming, often leading to meditative states. Dhanyamla Dhara helped reduce a lingering digestive discomfort I had, while Chakravasti relieved tension in my knees and lower back.

Reflexology sessions brought subtle but noticeable improvements in my overall energy flow. Marma massage was a highlight, as it connected me with the subtle body and enhanced my sense of balance. Ksheeradhara on the final days helped me feel grounded and peaceful.

Insights Gained as an Ayurvedic Consultant

Experiencing these treatments personally gave me valuable insights into their effects beyond theory. I observed how the body responds to specific therapies and how the mind shifts during deep relaxation. This firsthand knowledge enriches my consultations and recommendations.

I also appreciated the importance of preparation and aftercare. Panchakarma is a process that extends beyond the clinic. The week before and after treatments are crucial for integrating the benefits and maintaining balance.

Practical Tips for Panchakarma Seekers

  • Prepare your body and mind: Follow a gentle diet and lifestyle before starting.

  • Communicate openly: Share your health history and concerns with your Ayurvedic doctor.

  • Rest adequately: Allow time for recovery between treatments.

  • Stay hydrated: Drink herbal teas and warm water to support detoxification.

  • Follow post-treatment guidelines: Diet and lifestyle adjustments after Panchakarma are essential.

Final Thoughts on the Panchakarma Journey

My cottage during the stay.

My 9-day Panchakarma experience at Somatheeram Ayurveda Resort was deeply transformative. The combination of traditional therapies, expert care, and a serene environment created a powerful and restorative healing journey. As an Ayurvedic lifestyle consultant, this experience not only strengthened my personal well-being but also deepened my practical understanding, further enriching my ability to guide others with clarity and integrity.

Over the course of the treatment, I experienced a natural release of excess weight — approximately 4.5 kg — alongside a noticeable sense of lightness, increased energy, and greater physical ease. These changes reflected the effectiveness of the process in supporting the body’s natural detoxification and rebalancing, while also bringing mental clarity and emotional calm.

For those considering Panchakarma, it is essential to approach the process with respect, preparation, and openness. Its benefits extend far beyond physical cleansing, offering lasting support for mental focus, emotional balance, and overall vitality. When undertaken in an authentic setting with qualified practitioners, Panchakarma becomes a meaningful investment in long-term health and well-being.

I encourage you to explore reputable Panchakarma centers and consult experienced Ayurvedic professionals to determine the most appropriate approach for your individual constitution. Your body and mind will benefit deeply from this level of care and attention.

Live well & wisley!
